About Us

In 1997, Mr. Henry Davison founded The Henry Davison Youth Center. Working parents in Cedar Rapids’ core neighborhoods needed a safe place for their children to go after school. Those children also needed academic and social support. For years, The Henry Davison Youth Center has provided those types of supports, and more, free of charge to all who have needed them.

In 2008, the Youth Center was destroyed in the flood. Mr. Davison, his board, and countless volunteers from the community worked to rebuild The Henry Davison Youth Center in its new location on Mount Vernon Road SE. Thanks to the overwhelming support given by so many, the Youth Center continues to provide a safe, structured and  supervised after-school and evening meal program for at-risk youth in Cedar Rapids. The Youth Center serves children ages 7-17.

The mission of The Henry Davison Youth Center is to develop responsible community members and leaders through meaningful and engaging activities.

This mission is achieved in numerous ways.

After School, Early Dismissal and In-service Programming: First, a safe, structured and supervised after-school and evening meal program is provided. This after-school program serves children ages 7-17 and is open 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. All children MUST be registered in order to participate in this after-school program. If your child registered before January, 2016, that does NOT mean that they are still registered. In order to provide a safe, structured environment, registrations will be limited to 30 children. Registration forms can be picked up at the HD Youth Center, located at 1445 Mount Vernon Road SE.

Annual Events: Two annual events are organized and sponsored.

  1. Easter Egg Hunt: This annual event is sponsored by the HD Youth Center and is a fun way for families to get together and have some fun! Registration is NOT required. The event is frenzied, fast and free, and is open to the public.
  2. Backpack & School Supply Distribution: The greater Cedar Rapids business community really comes together to collaborate to give children the supplies they need to start school. The HD Youth Center works closely with Cedar Rapids Rotary West, Salvation Army, Olivet Mission, and countless others to purchase, organize and distribute nearly 2000 backpacks full of school supplies. This event is free and is open to the public.

Summer Meal Program: The HD Youth Center provides a snack, dinner and activities to students during the summer starting June 13, 2016 and ending a week before school starts again. This program is free and is open to all registered children ages 7-17. The program runs from 1:30-6:00 PM, Monday through Friday.  Registration IS required to participate in the activities. Children who were enrolled in the after school program and who had good behaviors and regular attendance will be allowed to enroll before others. Summertime enrollment will be limited to 30 children.
